Haddad points out that the default by Americanas will amount to 0,5% of Brazil's GDP.
The fraud perpetrated by Jorge Paulo Lemann, Marcel Telles, and Beto Sicupira was the biggest negative shock to the Brazilian economy this year.
247 - The billion-dollar accounting fraud at Americanas, a company owned by Jorge Paulo Lemann, Marcel Telles, and Beto Sicupira, was the biggest negative shock to the Brazilian economy in 2023 and will amount to 0,5% of the national GDP, according to Finance Minister Fernando Haddad.
"Finance Minister Fernando Haddad (PT) referred with indignation to the scale of the crisis at Americanas, a retailer that filed for bankruptcy protection on an urgent basis last month after its debt of R$ 43 billion and a list of more than 16 creditors came to light," reports Guilherme Caetano in the newspaper O Globo.
"André (Esteves) once told me: 'I have a microeconomic problem.' I said, 'No, we have a macroeconomic problem,' because it's 0,5% of GDP. Come on, a guy who causes a 0,5% drop in GDP to 16 creditors. And we're still waiting for what? A statement? There has to be a solution," Haddad declared during a panel at an event organized by BTG Pactual.
