Brazilian spending abroad hits a new record.

Spending on international travel last month reached US$1,858 billion, the highest figure recorded by the Central Bank for the month of February in the historical series that began in 1969.

Brasilia – Brazilian spending on trips abroad in February reached US$1,858 billion, according to data from the Central Bank (BC), released this Friday (22). This is the highest result recorded by the BC for the month of February, in the historical series that began in 1969. In the same month of 2012, expenses totaled US$1,753 billion.

In the first two months of the year, spending totaled US$4,151 billion, compared to US$3,754 billion in the same period last year.

In the second month of the year, revenue from foreign travelers in Brazil reached US$622 million, compared to US$624 million in the same month last year. In January and February, this revenue totaled US$1,317 billion, compared to US$1,290 billion in the same period of 2012.

As a result, the deficit in the international travel account (more spending by Brazilians abroad than by foreigners in Brazil) was US$1,236 billion in February and US$2,834 billion in the first two months of the year.

In 2013, the Central Bank expects Brazilian spending abroad to exceed revenue generated by foreign travelers to Brazil by US$16,3 billion. In 2012, this figure was negative by US$15,588 billion.
