Gabriel Galípolo could succeed Campos Neto at the Central Bank, says Lauro Jardim.

This would be the intention of the Finance Minister, according to the columnist for Globo.

247 - Globo columnist Lauro Jardim reports in his Sunday column that Finance Minister Fernando Haddad already has a name in mind to succeed Roberto Campos Neto at the Central Bank. The nominee is the Finance Ministry's Executive Secretary, Gabriel Galípolo. Campos Neto's term runs until the end of 2024.

The Workers' Party (PT) opposes the independence of the Central Bank, believing that this measure could be detrimental to the country's economy. The PT argues that the independence of the Central Bank could result in policies that prioritize the interests of banks and financial elites at the expense of the well-being of the general population. They assert that the Central Bank should be more directly linked to the democratically elected government and that its policies should reflect the needs and interests of the population.

Furthermore, the PT argues that the independence of the Central Bank can lead to a lack of accountability on the part of the Central Bank. If the Central Bank has complete autonomy to make decisions without adequate accountability, this can lead to decisions that are unfavorable to the economy and society in general, as has been the case with the very high interest rates in Brazil, which are the highest in the world.
