Total US debt surpasses $38 trillion for the first time
US government gross debt will reach 140% of GDP by 2029, according to the IMF.
247 - US national debt surpassed $38 trillion for the first time in history, with an increase of $1 trillion in just over two months, according to data from the US Treasury, released this Thursday (23) by the Sputnik agency.
Since the start of US President Donald Trump's new term in January 2025, the US national debt has increased by approximately $1,8 trillion.
Last week, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicted that the gross debt of the US government will reach 140% of GDP in 2029, and will add another almost 3 percentage points the following year.
The IMF predicts that by 2025, US debt will reach 125% and continue to grow in the coming years. By 2029, US debt will be 140,1% of GDP, and this level will increase to 143,4% by 2030, according to the "Fiscal Monitor" report.
