Unemployment falls slightly in 2013.

Marli Moreira, Agência Brasil - The unemployment rate remained practically stable throughout last year, reaching 10,3% compared to 10,4% in 2012, across the six metropolitan regions covered by the Employment and Unemployment Survey (PED), conducted by the State System of Data Analysis Foundation (Fundação Seade) and the Inter-Union Department of Statistics and Socioeconomic Studies (Dieese).

The total number of unemployed was estimated at 2,148 million people, which is 3 fewer than the previous year (a negative variation of 0,1%). The employment level fluctuated by 0,4%, with the creation of 78 jobs during the period, a number higher than the number of new applicants for each job (75), which allowed for a decrease of 3 in the number of unemployed.

The unemployment rate showed different behavior depending on the region. There was a decrease in Fortaleza (from 8,9% to 8%); in Porto Alegre (from 7% to 6,4%) and São Paulo (from 10,9% to 10,4%). In the remaining three regions there were increases: Recife (from 12% to 13%); Salvador (from 17,7% to 18,3%) and Belo Horizonte (from 5,1% to 6,9%). The sectors that generated the most jobs were commerce and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles with the opening of 88 vacancies, a 2,5% increase, followed by the construction sector with 17 offers, a 1,2% increase; services with 6, which represented stability; and the manufacturing industry, which cut 33 jobs, a 1,1% decrease.

Average income increased by 1,5%, reaching R$ 1.611,00, and for salaried workers there was a 1% adjustment, reaching R$ 1.637,00.
