Unemployment stands at 4,8%, the lowest rate in history.

The index released by IBGE is the lowest in the historical series of the Monthly Employment Survey (PME), which began 11 years ago, for the month of January; the number of workers with formal employment contracts remained at 11,8 million – stable compared to December and January 2013; in the first month of last year, unemployment was at 5,4%; in December 2013, the rate was 4,3%.

The month of January this year recorded an unemployment rate of 4,8%. The data from the Monthly Employment Survey (PME) was released today (20) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

This is the lowest rate for a January in the historical series of the PME (Monthly Employment Survey), which began in March 2002. In January 2013, unemployment was at 5,4%. In December 2013, the rate was 4,3%.

The number of unemployed (1,2 million people) is 9,6% higher than in December, but 12,6% lower than in January of last year. Meanwhile, the employed population (23,1 million) fell 0,9% compared to December and remained stable compared to January 2013.

The number of workers with formal employment contracts remained at 11,8 million, stable compared to December and January 2013. The PME (Monthly Employment Survey) is conducted in six metropolitan regions: São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Recife, Salvador, and Porto Alegre.
