Unemployment in September is the lowest for that month since 2002.

The total unemployed population reached 1,5 million people last month, a stable result compared to the previous month.

The unemployment rate of 6% recorded in September in the six main metropolitan regions of the country is the lowest for the month since the beginning of the historical series of the Monthly Employment Survey, in March 2002, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) reported today. It was the third consecutive month in which unemployment in the country remained stable at 6%.

The unemployed population totaled 1,5 million people last month, a stable result compared to the previous month. Compared to September 2010, there was also stability. The employed population was estimated at 22,7 million in September of this year, with no significant variation compared to August. However, compared to September of last year, there was an increase of 1,7%, representing an increase of 369 employed people over the 12-month period.

The number of workers with formal employment contracts in the private sector was estimated at 11 million in September, a stable result compared to August. Compared to September 2010, there was an increase of 6,7%, an additional 691 jobs with formal contracts during the period.

The total real income of employed workers in the six main metropolitan regions of the country fell 1,5% in August compared to July, but grew 1,4% compared to August 2010, according to IBGE.
