São Paulo – In the first two months of this year, mortgage lending totaled R$ 12,5 billion, a value 15,7% higher than the volume contracted in the same period last year. The figures were released today (27) by the Brazilian Association of Real Estate Credit and Savings Entities (Abecip).

Between March 2012 and February of this year, loans for the purchase and construction of real estate, using savings funds, totaled R$ 84,5 billion, 4,4% higher than the previous 12 months.

The volume of loans in February reached R$ 5,8 billion, 13% lower than the amount recorded in January. Compared to February 2012, there was a 13,8% increase in mortgage lending.

Between January and February, 64,9 properties were financed, a slightly higher number than the first two months of 2012, when 64,6 units were financed for acquisitions and constructions.

In February, deposits in savings accounts exceeded withdrawals by R$ 1,75 billion, the best result for the month of February since 1995. Meanwhile, the balance of savings accounts in the Brazilian Savings and Loan System reached R$ 395 billion in February, 18% more than in the same month last year, which, according to Abecip, reflects the "positive disposition of savers".
