247 - The Trade Union Federations will hold a protest against high interest rates next Tuesday (21), in front of the Central Bank in São Paulo. The union members will, during the demonstration, roast and distribute hundreds of kilos of sardines.

"The intention is to show that high interest rates fatten the rentier sharks, while for the people, only sardines are left," explains the president of Força Sindical, Miguel Torres.

There will also be a demonstration in Rio de Janeiro. The gathering will be at Candelária, starting at 17 pm, followed by a march to the Central Bank headquarters.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's government points out that the abusive interest rates practiced in the country, independently by the Central Bank, have been an obstacle to economic recovery. The benchmark interest rate, the Selic rate, is currently at 13,75%.

The next meeting of the Central Bank's Monetary Policy Committee (Copom) will be on March 21st and 22nd, and the government expects an announcement to reduce the Selic rate.
