Labor unions propose a different minimum wage amount, but agree with the policy of increasing wages.
In a statement, the president of CUT (Central Única dos Trabalhadores), Sérgio Nobre, affirms that the Lula government is making an “attempt to repair the dismantling orchestrated by the Temer and Bolsonaro governments” by announcing the increase.
Current Brazil Network - The CUT and Força Sindical labor unions advocated for higher minimum wage figures than those announced by the government. However, they celebrate the resumption of the wage increase policy. The national minimum wage, which had risen to R$ 1.302 in January, will increase to R$ 1.320 starting in May.
In a statement, the president of CUT (Central Única dos Trabalhadores), Sérgio Nobre, affirms that the Lula government is making an “attempt to repair the dismantling orchestrated by the Temer and Bolsonaro governments” by announcing the increase. “A higher minimum wage is the most important instrument for reducing social inequality, pointing towards the country's growth, and properly remunerating the workforce.”
Economic growth
At the same time, the central bank states that the amount "is neither what was expected nor sufficient." Thus, it argues, citing the... Dieese, which, without interrupting the policy of increasing the minimum wage, would currently be R$ 1.382,71.
“The resumption of economic growth will only happen with a consistent policy of wage increases. It is the strength of the workers that drives the Brazilian economy. We will not be satisfied with the current proposal nor will we applaud those who are harming us,” the statement says. “It is important to make it clear that CUT was neither consulted nor heard regarding the new minimum wage amount.”
Social sensitivity
The president of Força Sindical, Miguel Torres, states that the union supports the "urgent approval" of the wage increase policy and proposes R$ 1.343 as the minimum wage for this year, considering the sum of 2022 inflation and the estimated 2021 GDP. He adds that this is a proposal approved by the unions.
“Increasing the national minimum wage is a great opportunity for the federal government to demonstrate social sensitivity and contribute to income distribution and reducing inequalities in the country. Just like the income tax table, which is outdated by up to 148%, it should have a fair and progressive adjustment,” says Miguel, also in a statement.
The wage increase policy was in effect from 2007 to 2019, following negotiations between Lula's first government and the labor unions. Força Sindical highlights its importance as a public policy – a state policy. "Raising the national minimum wage helped reduce economic losses for certain categories of workers and retirees. At the same time, the policy established a permanent and predictable rule, promoting a gradual recovery."
