Bresser Pereira: Federal government must save lives and jobs, regardless of the fiscal cost.
"In terms of health, it's about isolation and urgently increasing the capacity of the SUS (Brazilian public healthcare system) to face the pandemic. It's about sparing no expense to give the State the capacity to protect the health of the population," argues the former Minister of Finance.
247 - Economist and former Finance Minister Luiz Carlos Bresser Pereira argued on Monday, the 23rd, that the government should guarantee the solvency of companies and employment amidst the coronavirus pandemic, regardless of the fiscal cost.
"In terms of health, it's about isolation and urgently increasing the capacity of the SUS (Brazilian public healthcare system) to face the pandemic. It's about sparing no expense to give the State the capacity to protect the health of the population. And in terms of the economy? There can be no doubt about it. The government must guarantee the solvency of companies and employment. It doesn't matter what the fiscal cost is," writes Bresser Pereira in an article in the newspaper Valor Econômico.
"Besides facing the coronavirus and the recession itself, Brazil needs to regain external confidence, which has been destroyed in the last year. External creditors need to see that we are also responsibly doing our part in addressing the crisis," says the former minister.
