Brazil Agency - Brazilians who own pets spend an average of R$189 per month on their animals, according to a survey conducted by the Credit Protection Service (SPC Brasil) and the National Confederation of Shopkeepers (CNDL) with 796 internet users from all capital cities. The survey concluded that 76% of people with internet access own pets, and only 8% of them associate their pets with expenses.

The main expense for pet owners is food. Pet food was cited by 88% of respondents and treats by 52%. More than half (52%) say they only buy premium pet food items. Among other expenses, pet owners also mentioned shampoos and conditioners (57%), medications and vitamins (50%), and toys (44%).

Among the services, vaccinations lead the list of most sought-after, mentioned by 63% of those surveyed; followed by visits to the veterinarian (44%) and baths. pet shop (37%). Although less frequently mentioned, noteworthy services include aesthetic treatments (13%), dog walkers (13%), obesity treatments (8%), and behavioral counseling (8%).

According to the president of SPC Brasil, Roque Pellizzaro Junior, the research shows that the humane treatment of pets It's a trend, and there's room for expansion in the pet products and services sector. "The composition of pet owners' shopping baskets is changing. There's a growing demand for specialized care," he assessed. "Fashion and aesthetics, healthy food, boarding, home visits, physical exercise, and behavioral health are some of the areas that should develop intensely in the coming years," stated Pellizzaro.

The research also sought to find out where pet owners buy products for their animals. Specialized neighborhood stores were cited by 53% of them. Large chains of pet stores Supermarkets were mentioned by 20% and 16% of respondents, respectively. The reasons for choosing them are price (59%), quality of products and services (49%), and trust (44%).

The profile of pet owners is fairly evenly split between men and women (50%). Slightly more than half (54%) belong to socioeconomic classes C, D, and E, and are in the 25-44 age range (58%). The vast majority live in houses (77%), and 82% of them personally care for their pets. petDogs are preferred by 79% of people, followed by cats (42%), birds (17%), fish (13%), turtles (6%) and small rodents (5%).
