Alckmin discusses inflation with the food sector and meets with the US Secretary of Commerce.
The government is studying measures to contain rising food prices, while trade tensions with the US worry strategic sectors.
247 - Vice President and Minister of Development, Industry, Trade and Services, Geraldo Alckmin, participates this Thursday (6) in two meetings with representatives of the food sector to discuss the rise in inflation. The meetings will be attended by other ministers and are part of the federal government's efforts to contain price increases, a topic that has generated concern in the Planalto Palace.
According to MetropolisThe first meeting will be held in the morning, with the participation of Ministers Carlos Fávaro, of Agriculture, and Paulo Teixeira, of Agrarian Development. In the afternoon, Alckmin will meet with business leaders from the sector. During the discussions, the vice-president will evaluate proposals presented last week by rural producers and supermarket owners. The escalation of food prices is considered a decisive factor in the population's perception of the government.
After the technical meetings, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) is expected to convene his team to define an action plan that can mitigate the impacts of inflation and stabilize the price of essential products.
In addition to discussions about inflation, Alckmin will participate, at 17:30 pm, in a virtual meeting with the United States Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick. The meeting takes place at a time of growing trade tension, after US President Donald Trump threatened to impose new tariffs on imported products.
Although Brazil has not yet been directly affected by the protectionist measures already adopted by the Trump administration, strategic sectors of the economy could be impacted if the surcharges are applied. On the radar for possible sanctions are steel, aluminum, and timber, as well as agricultural products and ethanol.
