247 - The inauguration of the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge in Guizhou province, southwest China, has generated great enthusiasm among both tourists and local residents, according to reports. People's Daily.
During its first major holiday, coinciding with China's National Day and the Mid-Autumn Festival, the bridge attracted over 100.000 visitors, transforming the region into a new tourist hotspot. At 625 meters high over the Beipan River, the bridge is the tallest in the world.
The structure, which opened to traffic on September 28, 2025, has a total length of 2.890 meters. Before its construction, crossing the Huajiang Grand Canyon meant a two-hour journey. Now, with the bridge, the travel time has been reduced to just two minutes.
The bridge's impact goes beyond ease of movement. An area of over 50 square kilometers around the structure has been planned to become an integrated tourist zone. The project includes activities such as paragliding, bungee jumping, a high-speed track, and even a light show on a water screen.
The social and economic transformations brought about by the bridge are also affecting the dynamics of the local population. Liang Shaoyu, a 72-year-old retiree, observes that, with the construction, the community has attracted new entrepreneurs and even the return of young people who had previously left the region. "It is bringing our community together in a way we never imagined possible," he commented, highlighting that, in the past, only horse caravans passed through the area.
The mountainous province of Guizhou, known for its rugged karst landscape, has always relied on bridges and tunnels to connect different regions. Today, the region boasts over 32.000 bridges in operation or under construction, a tenfold increase compared to the number recorded in the 1980s.
