Reuters American director Steven Spielberg returns to making films with a childlike perspective in "The BFG," a cinematic adaptation of the beloved book by British author Ronald Dahl.
The adventure follows young Sophie, played by Ruby Barnhill, who meets a giant, played by Oscar winner Mark Rylance, who, unlike his peers, does not devour children.
Although Spielberg has made many family films in his award-winning career, he has also directed historical dramas such as "Saving Private Ryan" and "Lincoln".
"I haven't swum in that kiddie pool in a long time," Spielberg told Reuters at the film's premiere in Los Angeles on Tuesday.
"It was really cool to be able to simply let my imagination run wild, without being constrained by all the precepts of history and all the truths you need to tell when you have a historical theme. So we all felt free and happy to return to our childhoods to tell this story."
"The BFG," which premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival in May, will have its worldwide release on June 30th.
