Rio Agency - The Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro will celebrate its 103rd anniversary this Saturday, the 14th, with an extensive and free program for the public. The celebration, which has become a tradition in the city's cultural calendar, offers performances by the Theater's three resident companies: the choir, the ballet, and the orchestra. It also features the Maria Olenewa State Dance School, Os Pequenos Mozart, the Theater Group of the Walter Orlandini State College, and the Young Ballet Company.
To kick off the celebration, at 10 am, Os Pequenos Mozart, a group made up of children aged 3 to 14 and under the artistic direction of Suray Soren, will perform a concert on the steps of the theater's entrance foyer.
Next, the students from the Walter Orlandini State College Theater Group will present the play "Spring No. 1". The work is composed by Puccini and Beethoven, with choreography by Eric Frederic and direction and conception by Carla Camurati. Then, under the artistic direction of Dalal Achcar and general direction of Mariza Estrella, the Rio de Janeiro Youth Ballet Company will perform pieces from its repertoire, such as the Pas-de-deux from "Com Amor" by Dalal Achcar with music by Adolph Charles Adam, and "Mozarteando," created by Yvonice Satie based on the work of Mozart.
The Ballet of the Municipal Theatre will showcase the best of its performances from recent seasons. It brings to the stage a grand Gala featuring excerpts from the works Carmen, by Roland Petit; Romeo and Juliet, by John Cranko; The Creation, by Uwe Scholz; Don Quixote, in the version by Dalal Achcar; and New Birth, by David Parsons, with a soundtrack by Milton Nascimento.
Finally, at 20:30 pm, the Choir and Symphony Orchestra of the Theatro Municipal will present Rigoletto, one of Giuseppe Verdi's most popular works, which opened the 2012 opera season at the Theatro and is currently being performed. The performance will be directed by Pier Francesco Maestrini and conducted by maestro Osvaldo Ferreira.
