247, with international agencies – The prestigious Spanish tenor Placido Domingo, 70, will lead the fight against the most serious problem currently facing the recording industry: piracy. “The world of records is disappearing, but I think technology can help us protect it. It’s very sad that so many people are losing their jobs.” Domingo will work with government authorities to develop mechanisms to protect musicians' copyrights.
Spain has the highest rates of illegal downloads in all of Europe, and most of the population does not consider the practice a crime. In Great Britain and France, a significant number of people condemn the unrestricted downloading of music from the internet, reaching 68% in London. Domingo states that he will support the creation of sanctions for those who illegally download music from the web. Data revealed in a report by El Pais shows that the Spanish population's spending on music fell by 80% in ten years: from 626 million euros in 2001 to 127 million euros in 2010.
