Forum Magazine - Actress Marieta Severo, at 70 years old, is concerned about the direction Brazil is taking after the censorship of several art exhibitions. "We are living in such a prudish moment. So prudish, so retrograde, so closed off," she said in a press conference about the villain she will play in Globo's next telenovela.
"This is an indescribable sadness. I'm too old to go through this again, people! I'm 70 years old, for God's sake! What is this? We lived through this during the dictatorship. It's horrible to live with censorship," she revealed.
She also said she feels scared: "Let's not joke about this, for God's sake. It's very serious, very grave. It's awful the space that these backward, prudish, closed-minded people are having to close off for an exhibition. What is this? This is revolting. This cannot exist. Don't go! Like television, if you don't like it, change the channel, you rascal. Go watch something else. It's terrifying. For me, it's a reason for sadness, fear, panic. To think that we are going backwards. And there are young people regressing."
Finally, when asked what her "other side of paradise" would be, referring to the title of Walcyr Carrasco's new telenovela, she was categorical: "My other side of paradise is thinking that my country is going backwards. That's it. I swear to God, this is my hell. The other side of paradise is hell. This is my hell."
