Nelson Pereira dos Santos receives a standing ovation in Cannes.

247 with Agência Brasil - Brazilian filmmaker Nelson Pereira dos Santos, 84, received a standing ovation yesterday (22) from the audience after the screening of his film, A Música segundo Tom Jobim, at the Cannes Film Festival in France. The tribute to Santos occurred at the moment when Brazil was chosen by the festival's direction as guest of honor for this edition. The film was made in partnership with Dora Jobim, Tom's granddaughter.
The documentary was presented by Thierry Fremaux, one of the festival directors, who offered a series of compliments to the Brazilian filmmaker. Fremaux recalled that Santos was one of the forerunners of Cinema Novo. The tribute to Santos was attended by several filmmakers, such as Cacá Diegues, who presides over the Camera d'Or jury at Cannes, and Karim Ainouz, director of the film Madame Satã.
Dora, Tom's granddaughter, said that the biggest difficulty was gathering the images. "We only had a lot of things in the family archive. It was difficult to select. The idea was that the music would drive the story," she added. The film was chosen by the festival's direction for yesterday's special session, but the tribute to Brazil only ends today (23) with a big party at the Agora space, on the Croisette, one of Cannes' most famous avenues.
Two Brazilian films will also be screened at this year's Cannes Classics Festival: Xica da Silva, by Cacá Diegues, and Cabra Marcado para Morrer, by Eduardo Coutinho. Walter Salles' film On the Road will be shown today and is competing for the Palme d'Or. According to experts, Salles' film is considered one of the favorites. The last time Brazil won the award was in 1962 with Anselmo Duarte's O Pagador de Promessas.
