Moonlight wins Best Picture Oscar after historic mistake.
"Moonlight" won the 2017 Oscar for Best Picture, beating the favorite "La La Land" at the 89th Academy Awards ceremony held this Sunday in Los Angeles, which had a completely chaotic ending; initially, actor Warren Beatty announced that the Oscar would go to "La La Land," and the film's team even went on stage to thank for the award. But, soon after, it was revealed that the announcement had been a mistake and that the film "Moonlight" was, in fact, the big winner.
From AFP - "Moonlight" won the 2017 Oscar for Best Picture, beating the favorite "La La Land" at the 89th Academy Awards ceremony held this Sunday in Los Angeles, which had a completely chaotic ending.
Initially, actor Warren Beatty announced that the Oscar would go to "La La Land," and the film's team even went on stage to accept the award. But soon after, it was revealed that the announcement had been a mistake and that the film "Moonlight" was, in fact, the big winner.
The confusion caused embarrassment to everyone on stage, and the winning film's team barely had time for acceptance speeches. It left the impression that the event organizers have a lot of explaining to do.
Warren Beatty even tried to do that by saying that his card had Emma Stone's name and "La La Land" written on it and that he was confused at the time.
Before "losing" the main prize, "La La Land" was hailed as the big winner of the night, taking home 7 of the 14 nominations it received. It ended up with only six: best production design, cinematography, soundtrack, original song, director, and actress (Emma Stone).
"Moonlight" ended up with three awards: Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali and Best Original Screenplay, in addition to the grand prize, of course.
While “Moonlight” told the moving story of human connection and self-discovery that unfolds in the Florida suburbs through the life of a young African American man struggling to find his place in the world,
"La La Land" celebrates Hollywood and is a tribute to the golden age of American musicals.
Casey Affleck was chosen as best actor for "Manchester by the Sea" and Viola Davis as best supporting actress for "Fences".
The winning foreign film was the Iranian film "The Salesman," whose director, Asghar Farhadi, did not attend the ceremony in protest against President Donald Trump's executive order barring his compatriots from entering the United States.
Jimmy Kimmel, in his first Oscar presentation, took the opportunity to take a jab at the political climate in the United States.
"This broadcast is being watched by millions of Americans and around the world, in more than 225 countries that now hate us," he immediately said.
“Some will come here tonight and give a speech that the President of the United States will tweet about in all caps at 5 a.m. while relieving his bowels,” he added, referring to Donald Trump’s habitual use of Twitter to make comments.
At one point, he asked if there were any journalists from CNN or the New York Times. “Leave the building immediately,” he ordered, referring to the media outlets that are having problems with the White House. “We will have zero tolerance for fake news. We love fake tans, but fake news?” he questioned.
