247 - In her inauguration speech this Monday (2), in Brasília (DF), the Minister of Culture, Margareth Menezes, highlighted the importance of the area for the socio-economic development of the country.

"May our Ministry of Culture never disappear again. Art and artists will be seen as something even greater. We need to regain respect and place the ministry at the forefront of affirming this greatness. Social development without culture is mere welfare. All other areas need culture to be themselves. We witnessed the perverse dismantling of our cultural policies. We won, the Ministry of Culture is back," he said.

"Numerous deficiencies in access to goods and services, but a rich culture. The Ministry of Culture was founded almost 40 years ago, a conquest of redemocratization. But culture is fought against when a silent country is desired. Culture is an expression of democracy. Many struggles were necessary. (Artists) were persecuted, often humiliated. The country was deliberately disenchanted. Culture is a factor in economic and social development. We deserve our ministry. Brazil has one of the richest forces of cultural production in the world."
