247 - In the Portuguese capital, on January 11, 2018, the book "Lula: The Truth Will Prevail – The People Know Why They Condemn Me" was launched. The event was organized by the Lisbon branch of the Workers' Party (PT) to strengthen the international "Free Lula" campaign. The organizers' idea was to draw attention to Lula's arbitrary imprisonment and increase pressure from the international community for his release.
The event's speaker, João Paulo Rodrigues, is a national member of the Landless Workers' Movement (MST). His speech focused on providing a very objective analysis of the current situation in order to contextualize the present situation in Brazil and that of former President Lula da Silva as a political prisoner.
In one of his most relevant speeches, João Rodrigues emphasized that the former president "is a symbol for us on the left, but also for the right." Because regardless of whether we like him or not, former president Lula is the greatest mass leader of the last 60 years in Brazil. Therefore, he is the symbol of our resistance to the neo-fascist government of Jair Messias Bolsonaro; on the other hand, his imprisonment is the ultimate emblem of the victory of the bourgeoisie over the Brazilian working class."
