Jazz Sinfônica performs Chico Buarque

Concert featuring Dutch singer Josee Koning celebrates the work of the Brazilian singer-songwriter in two weekend performances in São Paulo.

On Friday and Saturday at 9 pm, the Jazz Sinfônica will pay tribute to Chico Buarque de Hollanda, presenting the artist's work for theater, ballet, and film, with a highlight being the play "Calabar: O Elogio da Traição" (Calabar: The Praise of Treason). This information comes from the Jazz Sinfônica's press office. According to the text, "the songs will be given symphonic arrangements and interpretations by the Dutch singer Josee Koning, dedicated to Brazilian music." Tickets for the concert, part of the Jazz + series at the Ibirapuera Auditorium, cost R$ 30.00 (full price) and R$ 15,00 (half price). The event is presented by the Government of the State of São Paulo, with production by the Associação Paulista dos Amigos da Arte (APAA).

"The time has come to honor Chico, one of the great composers of Brazilian Popular Music (MPB), with a very remarkable production," says conductor Fábio Prado, according to the press release. "The concert is also an encounter between the Netherlands and Brazil, with Josee singing Calabar, which takes place at the beginning of the 17th century, when the Dutch took over Pernambuco." The press office explains that the piece was written by Chico and Ruy Guerra in 1972 and 1973, during the military dictatorship, addressing the issue of loyalty and betrayal, "in a clear allusion to the political situation of the period." According to the press release, among the songs in the concert are "Ana de Amsterdam," "Tira as Mãos de Mim," "Bárbara," "Tatuagem," "Não Existe Pecado ao Sul do Equador," and "Cala a Boca, Bárbara."

The program also includes "Gota d'Água"; "O Meu Amor," from the opera "Ópera do Malandro"; "O que será," from the film "Dona Flor e seus dois Maridos," and "Valsa Brasileira," composed with Edu Lobo for the ballet "Dança da Meia-Lua," as well as "Bye Bye Brasil," a collaboration between Chico and Roberto Menescal; "Olha Maria," composed with Tom Jobim, and a medley by Rafael dos Santos, with songs such as "Retrato em Branco e Preto," "Noite da Cidade," and "Samba do Grande Amor." The Jazz ensemble also opens the concert with "Toada," a composition by Cyro Pereira.
