247 - The writer and columnist Luis Fernando Verissimo died this Saturday (30), in Porto Alegre (RS), at the age of 88. In a note, the Moinhos de Vento Hospital, where he had been hospitalized since August 11, informed that the death occurred at 00:40 due to complications from pneumonia, according to the CNN Brazil.
Son of the acclaimed novelist Érico Verissimo, Luis Fernando built a literary career marked by refined humor, sophisticated irony, and a critical reading of everyday life. Throughout more than five decades of his career, he became one of the most widely read authors in the country, captivating millions of readers with his chronicles, short stories, and novels.
Verissimo began his career in journalism in 1966 as a proofreader for Zero Hora in Porto Alegre. Later, he established himself as a columnist for the same publication and also for O Estado de S. Paulo, becoming a leading figure in the chronicle genre.
With a prolific output, he published more than 70 books, which together sold approximately 5,6 million copies. Among his best-known works are collections of chronicles that capture the dilemmas, absurdities, and contradictions of Brazilian daily life, always with lightness and insight.
Married since 1964 to Lucia Helena Massa, Luis Fernando Verissimo leaves behind three children: Pedro, Fernanda, and Mariana.
