NEW YORK, Nov 26 (Reuters) - Emmy-winning actor Alec Baldwin's late-night talk show on the U.S. cable television network MSNBC has been canceled, the network announced Tuesday.

The show, called "Up Late with Alec Baldwin," was suspended this month after the actor made comments to a New York photographer that a gay rights group labeled as homophobic.

"We are jointly confirming that 'Up Late' will not continue on MSNBC," the network and Baldwin's representative, Mathhew Hiltzik, said in a joint statement.

"This is a mutual separation and we wish Alex all the best," the statement added.

The show's viewership dropped 40 percent, from 654 viewers who watched its premiere in mid-October to 395 when it was suspended in mid-November, according to Nielsen data compiled by Horizon Media.

In a video released on the celebrity website TMZ.com, Baldwin is seen confronting a photographer on a New York street and making a homophobic slur that provoked the anger of the gay rights advocacy group GLAAD, which had previously defended the actor when he was accused of using homophobic language.

Baldwin, who has had several run-ins with photographers and reporters, was also criticized in June for homophobic messages on his Twitter account directed at a reporter from the British newspaper Daily Mail.
