Manuela Meneses_247 – The queen of pop music, Madonna, turns 53 this Tuesday, the 16th, in the position she has held for almost three decades. The singer earned the title by causing controversy with her songs, videos, and scandalous performances on stages around the world. Her first hit, Holiday, was released in 1983 and showed the public a daring singer with the undeniable power of a sex symbol, which earned her the immediate admiration of thousands of fans. Her sensual performances caused an impact on more conservative sectors of society, who even censored certain songs by the muse.
In the late 80s, Madonna provoked outrage among Catholics by rolling on the floor of a church, supported by a black saint, in the music video for "Like a Prayer." During the tour for the album "Like a Virgin," the singer made her mark with her daring antics, such as dressing as a bride in her early shows. With the release of "Erotica," the singer definitively cemented her image as a sex symbol. The music video for "Justify My Love," in which Madonna appeared walking through hotel rooms spying on and participating in orgies taking place among the guests, was even censored by MTV in the US. The song set the tone for the singer's career during the 90s: a succession of videos and films whose main theme was sexual freedom.
Amidst controversies and thousands of records sold, the Queen of Pop participated in several films. Her biggest success was the blockbuster Evita, filmed in 1995. The biographical musical, directed by Alan Parker, was released in cinemas worldwide and earned the singer a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical. With the birth of her first daughter in 1996, Madonna adopted a more subdued look. Subsequent works showcased reflective songs with unexpected touches of Buddhism. After years of calm, and now a mother of three, controversy resurfaced in the star's life with the music video for "American Life," in which she throws a lighter-shaped grenade at a lookalike of former US President George Bush to light his cigar, in a reference to war.
With eleven albums released, the singer has sold over 300 million units worldwide and is recognized as the most successful female musical artist of all time by the Guinness World Records. Considered one of the 25 most powerful women of the last century by Time magazine, Madonna has been reinventing her music and image within the limits set by society, admired by the public and critics for maintaining a level of autonomy within the recording industry. Currently, Madonna is dating French dancer Brahim Zaibat, 24 years her junior. The couple traveled to Hampton, New York, to celebrate the special occasion.
