According to the biblical narrative, Jesus was betrayed by one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, and handed over to the Jewish religious leaders to be judged. He was condemned to death by the Roman governor Pontius Pilate, who yielded to pressure from the Jewish authorities and the crowd clamoring for his crucifixion.
Jesus was then tortured and crucified on Mount Calvary, a hill located outside the walls of Jerusalem. According to Christian tradition, he died on the cross around 15 p.m., after being nailed through his hands and feet.
Good Friday is therefore a day of profound mourning and reflection for Christians, who meditate on Jesus' sacrifice for their sins and on the divine love that led him to offer his life for humanity. Many churches hold special ceremonies and celebrations on this day, such as the Stations of the Cross, which consists of walking through the 14 moments of Christ's passion up to his crucifixion, and the adoration of the Cross, in which the cross on which Jesus was crucified is venerated. It is also a day of fasting and abstinence for Catholics, who abstain from meat and eat a frugal meal.
