In a manifesto, artists and intellectuals call for Lula's release.
"They arrested Lula to increase repression against the people, to enforce the law of the bullet more forcefully against the poor, black, and working people, while the millionaires become even richer. Fighting for Lula's freedom means confronting chaos," the text says.

MANIFESTO
SOUND FOR FREEDOM
"No one will chain me up."
As long as I can sing
"As long as I can smile"
Have you ever imagined, even for a single minute, living unjustly deprived of your freedom?
One year.
Twelve months.
Fifty-two weeks. Three hundred and sixty-five days.
Eight thousand, seven hundred and sixty hours.
Five hundred and twenty-five thousand and six hundred minutes.
This is the time Lula has been imprisoned.
Today, a little more than that.
What does Lula's imprisonment have to do with you?
Look around.
Do you know that lump in your throat you feel with the daily bombardment of problems, that feeling of going backwards while the unemployed, the homeless, the hungry grow around you?
The anguish of imagining that, soon, they want to add to the ranks of the disenfranchised, those without pensions, those without university education, those without a voice?
Don't be fooled.
Lula is the victim of a rigged process, an illegal arrangement of interests.
A farce, set against the backdrop of an apartment without a deed, without keys, that never belonged to him and where he never spent a single night.
A conviction without evidence, tailor-made to satisfy the desires of those who want to forcibly take away your rights.
A year has passed and the injustice continues.
Lula was prevented from running in elections and silenced.
His family was persecuted.
A new, fabricated conviction.
Using brute force, they insist on perpetuating the charade to the bitter end.
Lula's imprisonment is a symbol of our regression.
We've become a country where work is no longer regulated, the minimum wage has become a legend, and the only freedom that exists is the increase in our exploitation.
A country that disrespects its Latin American neighbors and licks the boots of the United States; where the president celebrates the military dictatorship and encourages the persecution of teachers while schools and universities receive no decent investment; where a family man is murdered with 80 shots by the army and the authorities say nothing; where no one knows to this day who ordered the killing of Marielle Franco!
Lula was imprisoned to end his right to retire. To ensure that the dream of attending university is not for everyone. To worsen public services, reduce access to medicines, end the Mais Médicos program, bury national culture, favor arms manufacturers, and fuel fear.
They arrested Lula to increase repression against the people, to enforce the law of the bullet more forcefully against the poor, black, and working people, while the millionaires become even richer.
Fighting for Lula's freedom means confronting chaos.
It's about untying the knot in our throat that's choking us.
It's about confronting the irresponsible people who have set Brazil adrift, demanding justice and democracy, dignity and rights.
Our cry for Lula's freedom is a huge chorus in defense of the truth! Let's join hands and build this immense chain for justice for Lula and for the Brazilian people!
