Reuters American actor and producer Robert De Niro said on Saturday that Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump should not run for office because he is "completely crazy."

Trump, a billionaire businessman seeking his first public office, has generated controversy with a series of inflammatory statements about his main opponent Hillary Clinton, guns, Mexicans, Muslims, and war veterans, among other topics.

De Niro's comments in Sarajevo, while presenting a digital version of Martin Scorsese's film "Taxi Driver," in which he starred, marked the film's 40th anniversary.

"I don't know, it's crazy that people like Donald Trump, he shouldn't even be where he is, so God help us," De Niro said to applause at the National Theatre in Sarajevo.

"What he's been saying is completely crazy, ridiculous... he's totally insane."

"But now I think they're really starting to back down, the media... they're finally starting to say: Come on, Donald, this is ridiculous, this is crazy, insane," De Niro stated.

Trump blamed the American media for taking many of his comments out of context.

On Friday night, the 73-year-old actor opened the 22nd Sarajevo Film Festival, founded as a challenge to end the siege of the city between 1992 and 1995 during the Bosnian War, and was honored with an award for his contribution to cinema.
