Cassius Oliveira_247- After more than two decades of mystery, the creator of "The Simpsons" revealed the inspiration behind the city of Springfield. For years, Matt Groening, the series' creator, never wanted to reveal the city's true location, claiming he didn't want to "ruin it for people," at least until this Wednesday, the 11th. In an interview with the May edition of the American magazine Smithsonian, Groening said that the fictional city is based on Springfield, Oregon, where he spent his childhood. The 'original' Springfield is located in the northwestern United States and has a population of about 60 people.

He further stated that he was inspired by the city's name after seeing it on the 1950s TV show "Father Knows Best." “Springfield was named after Springfield, Oregon. The only reason for that is that when I was little, the show Father Knows Best was set in Springfield, and I was excited thinking it was the city next to Portland, my hometown. When I grew up, I realized it was just a fictional name. I also discovered that Springfield was one of the most common names for cities in the US. Without knowing how successful the show would be, I thought, 'That would be cool, everyone will think it's their Springfield.'"

The Simpsons series is one of the most successful on world television. The stories of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie have become a classic, earning no less than 27 Emmys and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The characters in the series have the same names as their family, except for Bart, who is the alter ego of the author himself. However, he didn't name the mischievous boy "Matt" because he thought it would be more fun "the idea of an angry father yelling 'Bart,' and Bart sounds like the 'bark' of a dog barking," explained the author.

The reference to the city of Oregon isn't limited to the name. Groening also named some characters after streets, such as Reverend Lovejoy, the bully student Kearney, and the annoying neighbor Ned Flanders.
