Brazilian filmmaker Bárbara Marques is detained by U.S. Immigration Services.
The arrest occurred during a scheduled hearing to revoke the green card – a permanent visa granted by the country.
247 Brazilian filmmaker Bárbara Marques, niece of actress Elisa Lucinda and director of the short films Dia de Cosme e Damião (2016) and Cartaxo (2020), was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during a scheduled hearing to obtain her green card – a permanent visa granted by the country.
The arrest took place more than a week ago, according to information published this Monday (29) by Capital letterThe reason for the arrest was allegedly a missed court hearing in 2019.
Since last Saturday, her husband, Tucker May, whom Barbara married in April of this year, has been using social media to draw attention to the case. He denounced that the filmmaker was the victim of what he considers a "trap" set by the American police.
"At the end of what we were told was a successful meeting, the police officer used the excuse of a broken photocopier to induce her to separate from our lawyer. Once separated from her lawyer, she was arrested."
Born in Vitória, Espírito Santo, Bárbara, who is 38 years old, graduated in film from Estácio de Sá University (RJ), worked as an actress and producer before directing her first film, Dias de Cosme e Damião. She has lived in Los Angeles since 2018.
