Rock City experiences over 200 thefts on its first day.

Official numbers were not released, but wallets and cell phones disappeared, according to employees at the Prosegur booth, a private security company hired by the organization; there was also a minor mugging.

Official numbers were not released, but the first day at Rock City saw more than 200 cases of theft, mostly wallets and cell phones, during the shows, according to employees at the Prosegur booth, a private security company hired by the organization. Outside, a group of ten people were victims of a mini-robbery: they were waiting in line to enter when they were robbed by minors.

Around 2 a.m., the Prosegur booth staff couldn't handle all the complaints coming in. "They took advantage of the crowd to get to Rock Street and stole my cell phone. I'll come back because I already bought tickets for the 30th, but my night was ruined," lamented 28-year-old lawyer Felipe Monnerat, referring to a bottleneck where it was only possible to pass very slowly at night. "There's almost no security in here, you can look for it, but you won't find any."

Merchant Jomar dos Santos, 47, had his wallet stolen. "They put their hand in my pocket without me noticing, during Claudia Leitte's show. This stand is crazy, I've already seen about 50 people complaining in just a few minutes. I saw a guy who came with pants with zippered pockets, just to be safe, but they opened his zipper," he said. "The worst part is that I'm trying to cancel my cards and I can't, because my phone is Nextel and it doesn't work here, because the sponsor is Claro."

The stolen wallets were then dropped on the ground and handed in at the stand. At the Civil Police station in front of Rock City by 1 a.m., at least 75 police reports had been filed (many people didn't want to wait to report the theft). Police officers said the situation was "chaotic." It is unknown whether the thefts were committed by people who were already in Rock City and took advantage of the moments of greatest crowd concentration, or by thieves who robbed people outside and entered with their tickets. The cases are being treated as "isolated incidents."

Prosegur had around 500 employees working, but not all of them were acting as security guards. The Military Police, which had not released any registration numbers by noon yesterday, had planned for 673 police officers, 135 cars, and 10 motorcycles outside the City of Rock, in two shifts (from 10 am until the gates closed). On Avenida Salvador Allende, this contingent seemed quite small.
