The story takes place in 1969 and follows Captain Benjamin Willard's (Martin Sheen) journey into the unsettling parallel universe of Colonel Walter Kurtz (Marlon Brando). Attached to the Army Special Forces, Captain Willard is sent into the jungle on a top-secret mission to find and assassinate the unhinged Colonel Kurtz. Contaminated by the tense atmosphere of war, the colonel has built his own army within the jungle, opposing the armed guerrilla forces of the Americans.
As Willard and his patrolmen navigate the endless Nung River in search of the mysterious colonel, the hallucinatory power of war and the battle against insanity come to the forefront, jeopardizing not only the success of their journey but also the emotional well-being of the characters involved.
