There is still no evidence that the version already identified in France, the Netherlands, and Denmark is more severe than the two separate variants.

Metropolises - The World Health Organization's (WHO) technical director, Maria Van Kerkhove, confirmed on Wednesday (March 9) that the agency is monitoring the emergence of a new variant of the coronavirus that combines the Omicron and Delta versions. Informally, the mixture of the two has been called Deltacron.

Virologists from the Pasteur Institute in France sent the complete genomic sequencing of the virus to GISAID, the largest international Covid database, on Tuesday (March 8), confirming the first solid evidence of the existence of the recombinant variant, which was first identified in France in January.

“We are aware of this recombination. It has been detected in France, the Netherlands and Denmark, but at very low levels,” Van Kerkhove said during a WHO press conference in Geneva, Switzerland.
