The number of people infected with coronavirus in the country is seven times higher, according to a study.

The study by the Federal University of Pelotas was funded by the Serrapilheira Institute, Unimed Porto Alegre, and the Floresta Cultural Institute, and the tests were provided by the federal government. More than 4 people were tested.

247 - A study from Rio Grande do Sul, which collected samples from more than 4 people, reports that the number of infected people in Brazil is seven times higher than officially recorded. The project (Epicovid19) is coordinated by the Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel) and stated that approximately 0,05% of the population of Rio Grande do Sul may have been infected.

With 11,3 million inhabitants, the state is estimated to have around 5.650 people infected with the disease. Official data shows only 747 cases – 7,5 times fewer than the number reported by the research sample.

Three more rounds of research will be conducted, one every two weeks. Next week, a national test will be carried out. Approximately 33 people will be tested every two weeks. The study was funded by the Serrapilheira Institute, Unimed Porto Alegre, and the Floresta Cultural Institute, and the tests were provided by the federal government.
