Michele de Mello, Brazil of Fact The world recorded a new record of COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours with 2,4 million cases, according to the website Our World in Data. The increase in infections was driven by the uncontrolled spread in the United States, which had 1,08 million confirmed cases in one day. This is the first time since the beginning of the pandemic that a country has recorded such a high figure.

The presence of the omicron variant, with approximately 50 mutations, is believed to be one of the factors contributing to the increase in cases. In the last two weeks, there has been a 132% increase in infections. In less than a month since its discovery, the new strain had already become predominant in new cases in the United Kingdom and the United States.

The US jumped from an average of a thousand daily cases to registering three new cases per second in the last 24 hours. On Monday (3), 109 people were hospitalized due to the infection, confirming the trend of a 27% increase in hospitalizations in the last week. New York was once again the most affected region with 36 cases counted in the last two weeks.

The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, reiterates the need to maintain biosecurity measures. "We must remain vigilant, cautious, and safe in the face of Omicron and other variants of COVID-19. This requires adherence to a comprehensive set of public health measures and access to the vaccine for all people," he stated.

Preliminary studies conducted in England, Scotland, and South Africa indicated that the omicron mite is more contagious, but could be less aggressive.

Despite the increase in cases, deaths continue to decline. Last week there was a 3% decrease in deaths caused by the disease, according to the website Our World in Data. Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been 281,8 million cases and 5,4 million deaths from the new coronavirus.

Vaccinating more than 50% of the global population also helps to reduce the lethality of infection caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. According to the WHO, 8,6 billion doses have been administered worldwide.

New variant

On Tuesday (4) a new strain of the virus (B.1.640.2.) was identified in southern France. According to local media, the first 12 cases were registered at IHU Infection Méditerranéenne, in Marseille.

Doctors indicate that the new variant has 46 mutations in the original structure of the virus, but all studies and clinical trials still need to be peer-reviewed and reviewed by the WHO.
