247 - Brazilian doctor Julie Schleifer, who works on the front lines in Israel against Covid-19, believes the country's current situation, experiencing its worst moment since the beginning of the pandemic, can be explained by the portion of the population that has not yet completed the vaccination schedule—of the 9 million Israeli citizens, only 5 million have received all three doses. "From what we observe in practice and in official data, the vast majority of seriously ill patients are not vaccinated," she told [the publication]. BBC Brazil.

With the spread of the omicron variant, the country recorded more than 100 new cases and 90 deaths in a single day between the end of January and the beginning of February of this year.

In previous waves, the highest numbers had been 11 new infections (in September 2021) and 64 deaths (in January 2021) in 24 hours. The data comes from Our World In Data, a website that compiles statistics on the pandemic.

"When the first news about Omicron emerged and there was speculation about the possibility of having 80 infected people per day, we thought it was impossible to reach such a high number," said the doctor. "But we passed 100 new daily cases at the end of January," she added.

For Schleifer, the last two years have proven that Covid-19 can always surprise us: "It seems that the coronavirus brings a new surprise every moment. With each wave, we discover something new that we hadn't seen before."
