May was the month with the most deaths in Brazilian history due to the coronavirus pandemic.

As of last Monday (22), 123.857 declarations of people who died throughout Brazil had been registered, with 24.021 due to Covid-19.

247 - The number of deaths in May represents a 13,1% increase compared to May 2019, when registry offices recorded 109.479 death certificates in Brazil.

Historically, July is the month with the highest number of deaths in the country due to the increased circulation of respiratory viruses. Furthermore, cardiovascular problems are affected by respiratory viral diseases, and the rise in these illnesses makes this number even more significant in July.

The actual figures may be even higher, because the Transparency Portal of Arpen (Association of Registrars of Natural Persons) is supplied with information sent by registry offices, which may take several days to report the death to the national system.

O UOL The Ministry of Health consulted the database of the SIM (Mortality Information System) — which is also based on the cause of death indicated on death certificates. There is no record of a month as deadly as May 2020.
