Reuters- The government of President Jair Bolsonaro issued a decree restricting entry into Brazil for foreigners of all nationalities for 30 days due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a respiratory disease caused by the new coronavirus, according to a publication in an extra edition of the Official Gazette of the Union on Tuesday night.

According to the decree, the decision was made based on a technical recommendation from the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) and applies to the entry of foreigners by land, air or water, with some exceptions—such as, for example, for immigrants with permanent or temporary residence in the country, professionals on mission for an international organization, passengers in transit who do not leave the international area of the airport, and foreigners who have a Brazilian spouse, partner or child.

The decree also exempts the land border with Venezuela from the restriction and establishes other exceptions relating, for example, to the transport of cargo.

Brazil is the second country in the world in number of cases and deaths caused by Covid-19, behind only the United States. According to data from the Ministry of Health, the country has more than 1,4 million confirmed cases of the disease, with 59.594 deaths.
