247 - The CEO of Anvisa, Antonio Barra Torres, described the dissemination of fake news about the Covid-19 pandemic as a "criminal" act and, although he did not mention names, refuted Jair Bolsonaro's statement that the omicron variant would be "welcome" in Brazil.

“It is criminal to seek out and spread lies through false news, or 'fake news'. This is not reasonable. It is not reasonable to bring this type of information to countless people who sometimes do not have access or do not have time to access the information channels that are fighting for life, for survival,” said Barra Torres during the evaluation meeting on a new request to authorize the use of CoronaVac in the immunization of children and adolescents, held this Thursday (20).

“There are still people who say that the arrival of the variant signals a better time. It signals the end of a pandemic that is already clearly visible. The numbers don't show that,” he added. “It's impressive to see that in the midst of a scenario that clearly points to the effects of the advance of the Omicron variant, there are still people who say that the pandemic is ending,” he emphasized.

Barra Torres also said, “I’d like to know what the people spreading fake news are going to do with the numbers showing a more than 70% increase in children being admitted to the ICU today. Will the spreaders of 'fake news' report that too? I don’t think so, right?”

During the meeting, Barra Torres reminded attendees that, should the Anvisa board decide to approve CoronaVac, it will be up to the Ministry of Health to decide whether or not to use the vaccine in the Covid-19 immunization campaign. Since the beginning of the pandemic, Jair Bolsonaro has spoken out against vaccination and directly criticized CoronaVac, produced by the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac.

Earlier this month, Antonio Barra Torres released a letter criticizing Jair Bolsonaro's insinuations Regarding the agency's potential interests in childhood vaccination, he stated in the document, "If you have information that raises the slightest indication of corruption concerning this Brazilian, do not prevaricate." Given the repercussions, Bolsonaro backtracked from his previous statement. and said that he "did not accuse anyone".
