Obesity affects one in five Brazilians and intensifies concerns among health professionals amid the new coronavirus pandemic. Obese young people have become fatal victims of Covid-19 in states such as São Paulo, Santa Catarina, Pernambuco, Bahia, Espírito Santo, and Rio Grande do Norte.
In the state of São Paulo, three obese men aged 31 to 34 died after contracting the new coronavirus, in addition to a 19-year-old woman. The Ministry of Health did not provide a breakdown for this age group.
Brazil has more than 40 cases of Covid-19, with 2.588 deaths from the disease.
