AL KHOR, Qatar (Reuters) - Coach Didier Deschamps said that France beat a good England team with dedication and a lot of effort on Saturday to advance to the World Cup semi-finals and keep alive their hopes of winning two consecutive titles.

A header from Olivier Giroud 12 minutes from time secured France the chance to become the first team in 60 years to retain the World Cup after a 2-1 victory over England.

"It's fabulous, it was a great game," said Deschamps. "We played against an excellent England team, which is strong technically and physically."

"It's brilliant for the players to be back in the semifinals. At times like these, you wish time would stand still. But tonight we're going to enjoy it. We had a bit of luck. We held onto the lead with heart and gut."

England captain Harry Kane equalized from the penalty spot nine minutes into the second half, but missed a second penalty half an hour later, shooting over the crossbar.

Giroud, who overtook Thierry Henry to become France's top scorer at the start of the tournament, said Les Bleus had to be at their best to beat England.

"This goal tonight, the 53rd, is even better (than equaling Henry's record). I had a chance a little while ago, I should have shot harder and scored," he said.

"I thought I might have another chance and, when it came, it was an unbelievable feeling to score. You need to keep believing," he added. "(Antoine Griezmann) gave me a super ball, it's incredible."

France will be the overwhelming favorites when they face Morocco – the first African team to reach the semi-finals after a 1-0 victory over Portugal – on Wednesday, seeking their third World Cup final after winning the title in 1998 and 2018.

"We will prepare for the next game meticulously. Morocco deserves praise," said Deschamps. "Perhaps they weren't expected here (in the semi-finals), but they only conceded one goal, so seeing them here isn't a surprise at all."
