LUSAIL, Qatar (Reuters) - Portugal's national team coach, Fernando Santos, has decided to bench captain and star player Cristiano Ronaldo for Tuesday's World Cup Round of 16 match against Switzerland, with veteran defender Pepe wearing the captain's armband instead.

Cristiano Ronaldo, the first player to score in five World Cup editions, has only one goal in Qatar, which came in Portugal's opening game against Ghana.

He appeared to complain about the manager's decision to substitute him during the defeat to South Korea in the final group stage, but the 37-year-old, who is without a club after leaving Manchester United, denied that was the case.

Bruno Fernandes' return will be a boost for the 2016 European champions, however, having scored two goals and provided two assists in their first two games before being rested for the clash against South Korea.

The midfielder will play alongside João Félix, who also returns to the starting lineup, and Gonçalo Ramos.

For Switzerland, Xherdan Shaqiri is one goal away from equaling Sepp Huegi's record as the Swiss player with the most goals in World Cups (six) and will be alongside captain Granit Xhaka in midfield.

Breel Embolo, Switzerland's top scorer in Qatar with two goals, continues to lead the attack while starting goalkeeper Yann Sommer returns after missing the team's last group stage match against Serbia due to illness.

See the lineups for both teams below.

Portugal: Diogo Costa, Diogo Dalot, Pepe, Rúben Dias, Raphael Guerreiro, Bruno Fernandes, Otávio, Bernardo Silva, João Félix, William Carvalho, Gonçalo Ramos
