Al-Sharaa
According to information disclosed by BBCIt is believed that al-Sharaa joined the terrorist group Al-Qaeda in Iraq after the US invasion of the country. At the time, he was allegedly supported by the United States.
The coalition removed President Saddam Hussein and his Baath Party from power, but faced resistance from some groups.
In 2010, US forces in Iraq arrested al-Sharaa. At a base near the Kuwaiti border, Sharaa reportedly met jihadists who would later form the Islamic State (IS) group, including the future leader of IS in Iraq, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
Al-Sharaa told the media that after the armed conflict in Syria against President Assad's government in 2011, al-Baghdadi ordered him to go to the country to start a branch of the organization there.
In 2017, al-Sharaa claimed that his fighters had joined other rebel groups in Syria to form Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), considered a terrorist organization by a number of countries. In December 2024, Bashar al-Assad was deposed and al-Sharaa became the leader of Syria.
