Itaipu reinforces transparency and environmental leadership at COP30.
The company releases investment data and highlights a sustainable model that integrates green hydrogen, social inclusion, and affordable energy.
247 - Itaipu Binacional began its participation in the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30), in Belém (PA), reaffirming its commitment to transparency and sustainability. According to information released by the company itself, Itaipu's agenda at the conference began this Thursday (6), during the Climate Summit, which continues until Friday (7). The Brazilian Director-General, Enio Verri, is participating in the General Plenary of Leaders representing the entity.
With the goal of strengthening accountability, Itaipu has openly and thoroughly released all data related to investments and actions aimed at COP30. The public can access information about the amounts, objectives, and expected results of the initiatives on the company's official website (www.itaipu.gov.br/cop30) as well as on the Federal Government's Transparency Portal, maintained by the Comptroller General of the Union (https://portaldatransparencia.gov.br/cop30/itaipu).
Itaipu's participation in COP30 is in line with its institutional mission to generate clean and renewable energy with socio-environmental responsibility. The company positions itself as an agent of sustainable development, with projects reaching 434 municipalities in Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul, in addition to structuring actions in Belém, the host city of the conference.
The presence of the hydroelectric plant at international climate events is nothing new. Itaipu has participated in several editions of COP, bringing successful experiences in environmental management, renewable energy production, and regional integration. On these occasions, it shared concrete results in areas such as forest restoration, sustainable agriculture, waste management, and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions.
More than just an environmental policy, Itaipu's management is strategic for the plant's own operation. The preservation of forests and springs under its protection ensures the constant flow of the Paraná River, essential for energy generation. This balance also depends on the so-called "flying rivers" of the Amazon, which transport moisture and help regulate rainfall patterns in the Paraná Basin.
During his participation in COP30, the Brazilian director-general of the company highlighted Itaipu's role as an example of sustainability and transparency. “Itaipu is not only bringing clean energy to COP30. We are bringing a model of sustainable territorial development that combines high technology, such as green hydrogen, with social inclusion, such as support for waste pickers,” stated Enio Verri. “Our legacy proves that it is possible, today, to generate prosperity and water security, respecting the planet and being completely transparent with society. It is this binational commitment that we will share with the world in Belém,” he concluded.
Beyond its environmental impact, Itaipu contributes to the competitiveness of the Brazilian electricity sector. In October 2025, the plant once again recorded one of the lowest energy generation costs in the country: R$ 221,30 per megawatt-hour (MWh) for the regulated market. This value is lower than that of other quota-holding plants and is well below the average purchase price of distributors, which is R$ 307,29/MWh.
This performance has consolidated Itaipu as the second most competitive energy generator in Brazil among those serving the regulated market. The affordable tariffs—energy at a more accessible price—are a direct result of the full repayment of the plant's debt in 2023 and the new tariff structure agreed upon between Brazil and Paraguay. With the debt settled, Itaipu now offers greater predictability to the electricity sector and fairer prices for millions of families in the South, Southeast, and Midwest regions of the country.
