CGTN – UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who is in China to participate in the 2025 Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, said in an exclusive interview with China Media Group (CMG) on Sunday (31) in Tianjin, that “SCO is crucial for building a multipolar world”. For Guterres, SCO, as a win-win multilateral cooperation platform, represents a large portion of the world’s population and covers the most economically dynamic regions of the planet.

In the interview, the CMG report cited that the SCO is based on the Shanghai Spirit, whose core is respect for different cultures and civilizations, the defense of equality, and the rejection of the Cold War mentality. The Secretary-General was questioned about his vision for the role of the SCO in the current world and in relation to the values ​​and initiatives of the UN.

"I am deeply honored to have the opportunity to participate in this meeting and I will do my utmost to deepen cooperation between our two organizations," said the top UN official.

Guterres said that it is necessary to build "a multipolar world, where all regions, cultures, religions and civilizations can cooperate and work together".

“The SCO member states play a vital role in building this multipolar world. I believe that the organization’s existence is one of the fundamental conditions for moving towards a truly multipolar world. This goal has not yet been achieved, and we continue to work towards it,” the Secretary-General emphasized.
