Canada shows that sucking up to the US is bad business and has consequences.

It was the world's first anti-discrimination trade investigation.

CGTN – After half a year of investigation and evidence gathering, China released on Saturday (8) the results of its anti-discrimination investigation against Canada. According to the survey, the imposition of tariffs by the Canadian government on Chinese electric vehicles, steel and aluminum last year constituted discriminatory restrictions, affecting the normal trade order and harming the legitimate rights and interests of companies from the Asian country.

It was the world's first anti-discrimination trade investigation. Based on the results, China announced on Saturday that, starting March 20, it will impose tariffs of 100% on Canadian rapeseed oil, oilseed cake, and peas, in addition to a 25% tax on aquatic products and pork from the United States.

The Chinese side revealed that, in August of last year, Canada announced a 100% tariff on Chinese electric cars and a 25% tariff on Chinese steel and aluminum products. These measures came into effect in October 2024. Following this, Chinese electric vehicle exports to Canada plummeted from 8.972 units in August of last year to 100 units last December, a drop of 99%. Furthermore, steel, aluminum, and other related industries were also affected.

Therefore, the Chinese countermeasures were widely applauded by industry trade associations, such as the China Chamber of Commerce for Metals, Minerals and Chemicals and the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, among others.

Canada shows that sucking up to the US is bad business and has consequences.

It is worth remembering that China has been conducting the investigation since September of last year, based on the rules and regulations of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and on relevant international and domestic laws.

The Canadian side must now undertake a profound retrospective. Its conduct aims to collaborate with the United States' extra tariffs on Chinese products and gain the support of its neighbor. However, Canada has continued to be humiliated by Washington to this day. President Donald Trump has referred to Canada as the 51st US state. Furthermore, Canadian products are also targets of the new, high US tariffs.

Canada is setting an example for the world by showing that those who try to flatter the US will not succeed, and those who harm China will face rigorous countermeasures.
