Valdemar Costa Neto brings electoral issues to meeting with Bolsonaro under house arrest.
The president of the Liberal Party (PL) is seeking to define candidates for the Senate in 2026 with the approval of the former president.
247 - The president of the PL, Valdemar Costa Neto, defined as a priority the debate on candidacies for the Senate in the 2026 elections during the home visit he will make to Jair Bolsonaro this Thursday (28). The meeting takes place amid the restrictions imposed by the Supreme Federal Court (STF) on the former president, who has been under house arrest since Minister Alexandre de Moraes determined precautionary measures, such as the use of an electronic ankle bracelet.
According to Estadão ColumnAccording to the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo, Valdemar intends to discuss directly with Bolsonaro the choice of right-wing candidates for the Senate race. The party's objective is to win a majority in the legislative body, which would create space to pressure for the approval of impeachment requests against Supreme Court justices. Despite being distanced from in-person negotiations, Bolsonaro will still have the final say on the candidates supported by the PL.
Among Valdemar's priorities is defining the candidacies in Paraíba. Former Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga is already emerging as a sure bet for one of the two slots reserved for the right wing, while the second remains undecided. One of the candidates being considered is former congressman Major Fábio, affiliated with the Novo party.
According to the report, in Rio de Janeiro, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) is expected to seek re-election. Governor Cláudio Castro (PL) is trying to garner support to nominate himself for the ticket, but Bolsonaro has expressed a preference for the party's leader in the Chamber of Deputies, Sóstenes Cavalcante. Senator Carlos Portinho (PL) also aims to run again, further increasing internal tensions.
The political landscape in São Paulo has become more complex given the uncertainty surrounding Congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL). Considered a potential Senate candidate, he has indicated he may remain in the United States for fear of being arrested if he returns to Brazil. Given this possibility, the chances increase that the state's Secretary of Public Security, Captain Derrite, recently affiliated with the PP party, will be launched with the support of the former president.
Valdemar Costa Neto's visit was authorized by Alexandre de Moraes in a decision issued on August 15th. The meeting will take place a few days before the Supreme Court's scheduled trial, in which Bolsonaro will be judged for his alleged participation in a coup plot.
