247 - The Novo Tempo Barcarena thermoelectric power plant, located in the municipality of Barcarena, in Pará, began testing its generating unit on September 19th. The project is part of the Federal Government's New Growth Acceleration Program (Novo PAC).

According to information released by the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), the plant will have an installed capacity of 630 megawatts (MW), energy that will be delivered to the National Interconnected System (SIN). The start of commercial operation is scheduled for December 2025.

Advanced structure and technology

The power plant was designed using a single-shaft model, in which natural gas and steam turbines are coupled to a single generator. This configuration increases efficiency and highlights the project for its use of cutting-edge technology in the electricity sector.

Fuel supply will be guaranteed by the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Regasification Terminal, which has been operational since March 2024. With a processing capacity of 15 million cubic meters per day and storage of 160 m³, the terminal ensures a continuous supply of natural gas for the operation of the thermal power plant.

Energy connection and trading

The Novo Tempo power plant will be connected to the electrical grid via the Vila do Conde 230 kV substation, managed by Eletronorte. The energy for the project was contracted in the 30th A-6 New Energy Auction, held in 2019, guaranteeing supply until December 2049.

The environmental licensing of the project was conducted by the Secretariat for the Environment and Sustainability of Pará (Semas-PA), ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.

New PAC and energy expansion

The new PAC (Growth Acceleration Program), coordinated by the Federal Government, prioritizes the expansion of the energy matrix with a focus on the transition to cleaner sources and the reduction of regional inequalities. Within the Energy Transition axis, specifically the Power Generation sub-axis, 322 of the 534 power plants planned in the project portfolio have already been completed.

The integration of the Novo Tempo Barcarena hydroelectric plant into the system should increase the supply of firm energy, which is essential to sustain economic growth and attract new investments to the state of Pará and the Northern region.
