Toffoli authorizes Daniel Vorcaro's testimony to the INSS CPI after Carnival.
The commission president says the owner of Banco Master will be heard on February 19th and reports on commitments made by the Supreme Court minister regarding confidentiality.
247 - The Joint Parliamentary Inquiry Commission (CPI) on the INSS (Brazilian National Social Security Institute) is scheduled to hear testimony from businessman Daniel Vorcaro, owner of Banco Master, on the first Thursday after Carnival, February 19th. This was confirmed by the commission's president, Senator Carlos Viana (Podemos-MG), during a press conference at the Federal Senate. According to him, authorization for the appearance was granted by Minister Dias Toffoli of the Supreme Federal Court (STF).
A report by Folha de S.Paulo highlights that the release occurred after a meeting between the senator and the minister, held this Tuesday (3). Toffoli is the rapporteur at the STF for the case involving Banco Master and, according to the parliamentarian, demonstrated a willingness to dialogue about the progress of the investigations conducted by the CPI.
During the press conference, Viana detailed the content of his conversation with the minister. "I presented him with all the reports, the information on the progress we've made in the INSS investigation, and the need for our collaboration at various stages," the senator stated, highlighting that Toffoli offered his assistance in discussing the matter.
The Supreme Court Justice has been the target of criticism for imposing a high level of secrecy on the investigations related to Banco Master. Furthermore, last year, Toffoli removed documents containing Vorcaro's messages, protected by confidentiality, from the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPMI). According to Viana, the Justice has now committed to authorizing the sharing of the breached confidentiality information with the Federal Senate. "As soon as the Federal Police completes all the compilation," said the senator, estimating that this should occur "in two or three weeks at most."
The change in the date of Vorcaro's testimony was requested by the businessman's defense, which cited "health problems." Initially scheduled for another date, the appearance was rescheduled for the week following Carnival. Viana also stated that the lawyers agreed not to file a habeas corpus petition to prevent the former banker from appearing before the commission.
The chairman of the CPI (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry) was emphatic when commenting on the possibility of the agreement being broken. "If he doesn't come, you can be absolutely certain that I will use my authority as chairman to bring him here under coercive measures," he declared.
